Prayerfully look for a location that is easily accessible and preferably near the center of your community. It should be a place with a sidewalk or path that can be walked safely without much trouble. Consider the distance when choosing. One lap at our location equals a little over 0.2 miles for a total distance of around 1.5 miles after seven laps (around 30 minutes of walking). If you plan to walk in the evenings, check to make sure the location is well lit after dark.
You will also want to look for a location of significance to your community. Our group meets and walks around the county courthouse square in the center of Coldspring, TX. Not only is it an impactful location, but the square is also very visible to those who travel through town or eat dinner at one of the nearby restaurants. This visibility allows for frequent interactions with others in the community. We have even had people passing through decide to walk and pray with us!
Our group meets on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm. We chose this night because it was the least likely to interfere with our schedules. You may even decide that you want to meet more frequently. We meet weekly because we have homegroups throughout the week that would interfere, but there is nothing wrong with scheduling more times in the week, or even daily.
Consistency is the key. Since our first walk, we have had at least one person from our group walk and pray every Thursday. Discuss this with your group and decide the best time for all of you.
You will want to spread the word about what you are doing. This is a very significant step toward advancing the Kingdom in your community. The more people you have participating, the more impactful this time will be. There truly is strength in numbers.
Announce your prayer walk at your church gatherings, or in a bulletin. We periodically promote our Thursday evening prayer walk during our Sunday morning service. We have also printed prayer guides to hand out to those who we come in contact with. Actually, this website is a result of our promotion activities because we wanted a way for people to read the prayer guide after dark. We have also purchased business cards that comes with a QR Code pointing to this website and a list of the seven prayer topics.
You may also want to use social media to promote your walks. We have someone who promotes our prayer walks on several Facebook community groups. Because of this, many people know about our group.
With all that said, I would probably say that word of mouth is perhaps the best method of promotion. The people who walk and pray with us believe in what we are doing. We see the things that have begun happening in our community as a result of our prayers. Church congregations are finding unity and planning outreaches together. Three people in our group were recently voted in to the Board of Directors for the local Chamber of Commerce. Most importantly, God is being glorified in our lives and we are all individually growing closer in our relationships with each other and with Him.
